Second Regional Francophone West Africa Postabortion Care Meeting: Strengthening Postabortion Family Planning in Saly, Senegal
In 2008, USAID’s Postabortion Care (PAC) Working Group, the World Health Organization (WHO) Implementing Best Practices Initiative, the Centre de Formation et de Recherche en Santé de la Reproduction (CEFOREP), and others cosponsored a meeting to review research findings on PAC in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Togo and to develop plans for strengthening postabortion family planning (FP) in their countries. The action plans aimed to improve certain aspects of PAC service delivery, such as:
- Reorganization of PAC services
- Trainings
- Supply chain management for FP commodities and for manual vacuum aspiration kits
- Health information systems
- Financing
- Leadership, governance, and management
- Community mobilization for PAC
In 2013, the Evidence to Action (E2A) project conducted assessments in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal, and Togo, to evaluate progress made since 2008 in these four countries. Results of the assessments and drafts of the corresponding technical briefs (Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal, and Togo, also available in French) were presented at a regional workshop, held last October in Saly, Senegal.
Seventy-six participants from eight countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal and Togo) and 11 organizations participated in the five-day meeting held in Saly, Senegal, from October 7 to 11, 2013. Country team participants included staff from USAID Missions, ministries of health, and local implementing partners. The meeting had three main objectives:
- To provide global updates and share findings of the recent assessment of country-level postabortion FP progress and challenges since 2008
- To promote countries’ sharing of experiences, tools, and effective practices
- To develop forward actions in the form of draft country road maps
A meeting report is forthcoming and will be available in English and French. Presentations from the October 2013 meeting and country road maps are linked below:
