Advancing Knowledge to Strengthen LA/PM Programming

RESPOND is pursuing a global knowledge agenda to guide and support strategic decisions on the scale-up of affordable and cost-effective interventions to advance the use of long-acting and permanent methods (LA/PMs) and improve the quality of access to services. We are engaging our partners, USAID and the larger RH/FP community to:

  • identify critical gaps in programming;
  • further the understanding of factors that enhance or limit LA/PM expansion; and,
  • address both country-specific as well as global needs through the practical application of knowledge.

Key Activities

Global Research
RESPOND is conducting two seminal and linked global research efforts: a secondary analysis of LA/PM-related Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data, and a multicountry use dynamics study using qualitative methods.

  1. Secondary Analysis of DHS Data
    The secondary analysis of DHS data and other data sets is being used to produce data for country profiles, to develop TA materials for countries receiving technical assistance from the Project, and to write peer reviewed journal articles
  2. Use Dynamic Study
    The goal of this study is to foster understanding of the dynamics that drive the use and non-use of LA/PMs. Program planners will be able to use the data to inform strategies that ensure a broader choice of methods and support clients' reproductive intentions. Further, the study findings will be used to contribute contextual information to the FP policy dialogue at the global and country levels.
