Vision

Women's and men's reproductive intentions evolve throughout their lives. Ensuring access to a range of effective family planning methods (FP) is vital.

Long-acting and permanent methods (LA/PMs) of contraception can play a key role in giving couples a range of choices. LA/PMs, which include intrauterine devices, hormonal implants, tubal ligation and vasectomy:

  • Are highly safe and provide continuous protection
  • Are the most effective methods of FP available
  • Can meet a range of clients' reproductive intentions (i.e., can help them delay, space, or limit births)
  • Promote greater continuation of FP

Yet, LA/PMs are the least available and least used methods in most of the developing world.

As a result, unmet need for LA/PMs remains high. However, responding to existing unmet need can enable FP programs to best meet individual reproductive health needs as well as national development goals. An investment in LA/PMs as part of a balanced contraceptive method mix will assure that FP programs have optimal reach and effectiveness.
