13 Ways of Looking at Unmet Need

Presented at the 13th Annual Global Health Mini-University, March 7, 2014, Washington DC
by Roy Jacobstein and Scott Radloff

Unmet need for FP is a surprisingly complex topic. This presentation considers various “domains” of unmet need, through thirteen “lenses” which convey both conceptual importance as well as implications for strategic programming. Lenses through which we will look at unmet need include definitional, measurement, geographic, time trend, causality, rights and choice, equity, reproductive intentionality, method specificity, missed opportunity, high-impact practices, country success, and health impact lenses. The presentation has been designed to be informative to a knowledgeable audience as well as interactive and entertaining. In assembling the talk, the presenters aimed to learn at least three new things themselves, and did – and they hope you will too.
