The RESPOND Project Welcomes New Project Director, Harriet Stanley, PhD

The RESPOND Project is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Project Director, Harriet Stanley, PhD. In this role, she will lead RESPOND's efforts to increase family planning use by ensuring a wide range of contraceptive options, including the informed and voluntary use of long-acting and permanent methods of contraception (the intrauterine device, hormonal implants, and male and female sterilization).

Dr. Stanley brings a 20-year commitment to international development and has been a program leader, manager, innovator, and technical advisor for family planning, reproductive health, and maternal health programs. Her career has spanned all levels of international experience, from headquarters to regional and country levels, including community-based interventions and national policy and district-level service delivery systems. For example, she successfully established a multisectoral reproductive health program in Nepal that included private, industrial, public, and nongovernmental organization service sites. 

Before joining the RESPOND Project at EngenderHealth, Dr. Stanley served as Project Director for Options UK's Reduction in Maternal Mortality Project, Cambodia. Under Dr. Stanley's leadership, this maternal health program was awarded the highest Department for International Development evaluation score as a result of exceeding  expectations and demonstrating evidence of impact on its long-term goal of reducing maternal mortality. Prior to her work in Cambodia, she was Vice President for Field Programs at PATH, where as a member of the executive leadership team she contributed to overall leadership in the areas of strategic vision, policy development, resource management, and stewardship. Her overseas experience includes 13 years of long-term field residence in Asia and West Africa.

Dr. Stanley received her MA and PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Sussex.
