RESPOND Announces New Developments in the Calculation and Use of CYP - Couple Years of Protection

Couple Years of Protection (CYP) is an indicator commonly used to monitor the progress of USAID-sponsored family planning programs worldwide. Since 2000, when the conversion factors to calculate CYP were last updated, new contraceptive methods have been introduced and technologies have improved. As a result, a rigorous research review and analysis has been conducted to confirm the validity of the CYP conversion factors and/or revise them to ensure that CYP reflects current realities.

The Futures Institute, a RESPOND Project partner, recently completed a rigorous review process, in consultation with experts from the international development and academic communities. On behalf of USAID’s Bureau for Global Health, the Long-Acting and Permanent Method Community of Practice convened a meeting on September 8, 2011, to learn more about the social science backing the CYP calculations, generate awareness about the role of CYP in evaluation and discuss innovative possibilities for its use.
